This guide will walk you through the process of selling gift cards through your eCommerce portal, making it easy for guests to purchase digital gift cards online and helping your business drive additional revenue and customer engagement.
Prerequisite: you must have at least one gift card type configured. You can use the same gift card type that you use to sell gift cards through the employee register or you can create a new gift card type specifically for gift cards sold online if you want any different configurations or want to know that the gift card was sold online without running a report.
Note: A single eCommerce gift card product comes automatically configured to show the following popular denomination amounts of $10, $25, $50, and $100 as well as a custom amount option (see step 2 below for a visual); therefore, most customers will only need to setup one eCommerce gift card product as there is no need to setup a separate eCommerce gift card product for each you want to offer. Contact support if you want to offer different default denominations.
- Go to eCommerce > Products and create your online gift card product. See Adding Products to E-commerce for details on all of the configurations. Set the following configurations specifically for gift cards:
Product Name: Gift Card
Select Product Type: GiftCard
Select Gift Card Type: assign it to the proper Gift Card Type
Price: this field is grayed out, because your eCommerce gift card product comes automatically configured to show the following popular denomination amounts of $10, $25, $50, and $100 as well as a custom amount option (see note above for more details).
On Sale: this field is grayed out, because selling a gift card for less than the amount loaded onto the gift card is not currently supported. -
The guest will see an interface like the one below when purchasing a gift card from your eCommerce store. They can choose from the default denominations, or they can enter a specific amount in the "Enter a Custom Amount" section.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: For a custom amount, the guest can only enter an amount between $5 and maximum of $1000. Also, the gift cards are not taxed, so the tax section remains at 0 when purchasing a gift card.
- During checkout, the gift card products purchased will be shown on the list for review, and there's no need to sign in if the guest doesn't have an account; simply click on Guest Checkout.
- Then, the guest will need to provide their information in the Order Details along with the email address where the digital gift card will be sent.
- Upon payment completion, the guest can check their email, and they should receive a copy of the digital gift card with the barcode
- This gift card number is automatically generated in the Gift Card module like all other gift cards.
- Finally, this Gift Card number can be used by the guest to pay for any purchase in the system.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
When can we start using this feature?
- This is available now! If you are currently using the Selling Gift Card Tickets in eCommerce method to sell gift cards, we recommend selling future gift cards using this method.
-
What would happen to the Gift Card Tickets that we already sold using the legacy way of selling online gift cards with ticket vouchers?
- If you are currently using the Selling Gift Card Tickets in eCommerce method to sell gift cards, continue to process and redeem those tickets in exchange for gift cards as normal until all of the vouchers are redeemed. We recommend selling future gift cards using the method described in this support article.
-
Is there a way to convert the sold Gift Card Tickets into actual gift cards in bulk?
- This is not recommended, because tracking redemption and customer receipt of their electronic gift card barcode via email would be cumbersome compared to the benefit you would receive for doing so. You could generate a report of all of your outstanding gift card ticket vouchers, mark them redeemed, and then email guests with an electronic gift card barcode that you generate, but there will likely be issues with customers receiving the email, understanding why they are receiving the email out of context, etc. and the benefit of doing so may be negligible. This process was viable even before the feature described in this article was released, but we are not aware of any customers who did so for the reasons outlined here.
